Do you ever get friend-crushes on celebrities? Like “Amy Poehler, please be my best friend and let’s eat waffles together all the time”-type crushes. Today I’m going to introduce you to one extra awesome friend-crush:
She may not be the star of her own TV show, but her life as a student midwife sounds like it would make an epic reality series. Syd calls Toronto home but is currently living in a town called Cambridge where she catches babies, explores bookstores and puts together thrifted outfits that always make me think, “I wish I had that skirt/dress/shirt/hair turban.”
Today I’ve got some lovely links for you–but instead of gallivanting around the web to get them, I found them all on Syd’s wonderful blog. Wit, style and strong cocktails, what more could you ask for?

After dealing with post-car-accident nonsense, I could’ve used an Earl Grey Sour cocktail.
An easy tiered dessert tray DIY with vintage china plates (no power tools needed like other versions I’ve seen!)
We recently had a blogger coffee date which was so much fun and addressed important topics such as which Hemsworth is cuter, role models and more.

You can befriend Syd all over the web–her Instagram feed is my favorite. Go say hi!
Now seems like a good time to follow up on your comments about sponsorship. First off, thank you so much to everyone who weighed in with honesty, advice and support. Your feedback guided me to a clearer idea of what I’d like to offer, at least for the time being. I’m not comfortable selling spots yet but once I’ve hammered out the kinks, you’ll be the first to know!
- a guest post (ideally) or an interview-style feature post (this Syd-themed lovely links is a one-off…and hopefully not creepy)

I hope this will be an awesome way to help other blogs grow, to build a strong community and to guide all of us to new awesomeness online. WOO!
The Allure of a Multifaceted Blogger
What makes Syd's blog such a standout isn't just one niche—it's the seamless blend of three seemingly unrelated worlds that, together, create something uniquely magnetic. Midwifery brings depth and humanity; cocktails add a playful, celebratory spirit; and vintage swag delivers a dash of aesthetic joy. Most blogs pick a lane and stay in it, but Syd refuses to be boxed in. Her willingness to share both the profound and the lighthearted makes her content feel like a real conversation with a friend, not a curated highlight reel. It's that authenticity that turns a simple blog read into a genuine connection.
In a digital landscape saturated with hyper-specialized influencers, Syd's multifaceted approach feels like a breath of fresh air. She reminds us that we don't have to choose between our passions—we can embrace them all, and in doing so, we create a richer, more relatable story. Whether she's detailing a birth story or mixing up a batch of Earl Grey Sours, there's an underlying thread of curiosity and joy that ties everything together.
That's the kind of energy I want to champion on this blog, too. We all have layers, and showing them is what builds real community. Syd does it effortlessly, and it's a big reason why she's earned a permanent spot on my list of internet friends I'd love to clink glasses with in real life.
Midwifery: Stories from the Front Lines
One of the most compelling aspects of Syd's blog is her candid sharing about life as a student midwife. Birth work is intense, transformative, and often misunderstood. Syd pulls back the curtain and invites us into the birthing room with a mix of reverence and humor. She doesn't shy away from the messy, emotional parts, nor does she overdramatize them. Instead, she tells it like it is—the long hours, the unexpected turns, the overwhelming joy of welcoming a new life. It's a perspective that few of us get to see up close, and it's endlessly fascinating.
Her stories are a reminder that midwifery is about more than catching babies; it's about holding space, advocating for birthing people, and navigating the delicate balance between medical science and intuition. For those of us who will never experience that world firsthand, her posts are both educational and deeply moving. They also spark important conversations about birth choices and women's health—topics that deserve more attention.
Beyond the clinical details, Syd's writing captures the emotional landscape of midwifery. The exhaustion, the adrenaline, the quiet moments of connection—she paints a picture that's as vivid as any novel. It's this blend of storytelling and real-life experience that makes her blog a must-read, even if you've never given a thought to birth work before.
Cocktail Hour: Mixing up Some Fun
Life isn't all serious, and Syd knows it. That's where the cocktail recipes come in. From the Earl Grey Sour she featured after a rough day to more whimsical creations, her cocktail posts are a celebration of slowing down and savoring the moment. There's something delightfully rebellious about a midwife who also knows her way around a cocktail shaker—it's a reminder that we can be both responsible and playful.
Her recipes are approachable, often using simple ingredients with a twist. The Earl Grey Sour, for example, transforms a classic tea into a sophisticated drink that feels both comforting and grown-up. It's the kind of drink you'd want to sip while debriefing after a long shift or toasting a small victory. Syd's cocktails aren't about getting drunk; they're about ritual, flavor, and connection.
What I love most is how she pairs cocktails with life's moments. A tough week? There's a drink for that. A celebration? She's got you covered. It's a holistic approach to self-care that feels both indulgent and mindful. If you're looking for new recipes to try, I highly recommend checking out her blog—just be prepared to add a few bottles to your bar cart.
Vintage Swag: Thrifting and Style
And then there's the vintage swag—the thrifted outfits, the hair turbans, the one-of-a-kind skirts that make me want to raid every thrift store within a fifty-mile radius. Syd's style is a masterclass in sustainable fashion. She proves that you don't need a huge budget to look incredible; you just need a good eye, a little patience, and a willingness to dig through racks of forgotten treasures.
Her blog is filled with outfit inspiration, thrifting tips, and DIY projects that elevate secondhand finds. The tiered dessert tray DIY she shared is a perfect example: taking vintage china plates and turning them into something both functional and beautiful, no power tools required. It's creativity at its most accessible, and it's exactly the kind of content that makes me want to get crafty.
Vintage fashion isn't just about looking good—it's about rejecting fast fashion and embracing pieces with history and character. Syd embodies that philosophy beautifully. Each outfit tells a story, and her enthusiasm for the hunt is contagious. If you're new to thrifting or a seasoned pro, her posts will leave you feeling inspired and ready to find your own hidden gems. Building Community: From Blog Crush to Blog Friends
At the heart of this whole blog crush is a desire for connection. Blogging can feel solitary, but when you find someone whose work resonates with you, it's like striking gold. Syd's openness and warmth transcend the screen, and that's why I reached out for a coffee date (virtually, of course) and why I'm featuring her here. Building a community isn't about numbers; it's about genuine relationships and shared enthusiasm.
In my last post, I asked for your thoughts on sponsorship and guest posts, and your feedback was incredible. It reminded me that this space is as much yours as it is mine. The idea of featuring other bloggers—whether through guest posts or interview-style features—is still very much on the table. Syd's lovely links post is just the beginning. I want to create a space where we lift each other up, share our passions, and discover new voices.
So if you have a blog or know someone who does, let's talk. And if you have a blog crush of your own, don't keep it to yourself—tell them! You never know where a little internet admiration might lead. Who knows, maybe we'll all end up with a whole network of friends sharing thrift finds, cocktail recipes, and stories from the front lines of life. WOO indeed!
